I was lucky to find a 5v 150A power supply for metal finishing that HAD been working. Got home and it's putting out .136Vdc.
Do I need to change a Breaker in my home to use a 150 amp desktop supply or did the thing take a dive on me on the way HOME??!!!

I opened it up and checked all fuses, I don't have a 'scope or any test equipment aside from DIMM's It a switching supply from a company in Calif. that went out of business and sold to Lamda. The thing is nicely made, big fat traces, no burn marks, fan functions...but it gives me .136 volts no load and the other channels give me nothing at all.
Can anyone give me a trouble-shooting start?

Thanks!

5V x 150A = roughly 850W
0,90

You did not specify what your mains voltage is, and what rating your breaker is, so i cannot say anything specific. But your PSU should consume less than a kilowatt, if that is of any help.

No you don't need to change a breaker. Either the PS is broken, or there's some enable line that you haven't wired up.

How exactly do you use a 5V power supply for metal finishing?

Perhaps it was for electroplating.

mains voltage 120Vac

Just as some people would make a cell for the production of chlorate, the anode connecting to aluminum in a "brine" of lye will strip the worn anodizing from aluminum. The concept can be used for bluing, etc but you need current (lots of current if you have a big tank.

The thing is quirky. I watch it rise hundredths of a volt. I place a load on it and bingo I'm at 1.5Vdc, gradually it will drop below 1. Vdc - Appears to switch all over but not as high a 5Vdc. I suspect it has been sitting for MANY years.

Hmm, try using a bigger load, some SMPS's need an external load to function properly. Try with a >10W load.

@ Renesis :

YOU WERE CORRECT!!! I applied a bulb from a flashlight and then put it to small cell IT'S FINE! This is a very strange thing and I must study this stuff....THANK YOU for a fine suggestion!

I have another switching PS and it does not function the same. This old thing will drop BACK to mV if a load is taken from it. The challenge is that through the conductivity of the solution different levels of resistance are encountered. In a smaller enclosure; it performs very well (too well) l The challenge is to understand what saturation and
anode / cathode distance result in it's functionality.
Appears to be time to drive to the University library.... I need to find a starting point as much of this is way over my head.
The reason I had thought I needed a higher amp breaker is that when using 120Vac welders, they demand a 50A breaker or they blow the 30A...So I surmised that this was the same but apparently the switching mechanism is not reliant upon available current but rather load sensing.
