Hey All,

Its been awhile since I've done anything with Tesla coils. I'm thinking about converting my OLTC to a DRSSTC

I have 2 of these half-bridges:CM400dy-50h
They're pretty slow, but my coil is around 30-35khz so I'm hoping they will work out ok.

I working on the gate drives right now, and I was wondering if I can drive these big bricks using a gate drive transformer? Or would it be better to drive them with individual isolated gate drives?

If you could get a GDT to work I imaging that would be a lot better and easier.
Im not sher if it will work you just have to try it out, I have seen it done with Cm300
before thow.

I've driven CM1000's with a GDT, they are the best way to go, by far.

The gate charge doesnt look too awful on these things. The higher voltage capability brings up numerous design possibilities (problems?).

Id suggest using a GDT as well, but it needs to be driven by a really good, low impedance driver. I think Aron probably used a step-down GDT to drive his CM1000's from a really low source impedance. Ive used a 24V gate drive i designed for 1:1 GDT use to drive up to 4 CM300 half-bridges in unison.

The higher voltage capability is appealing because it allows you to use a higher tank impedance and/or get a really fast rise time on the primary energy. The drawback is figuring out a low inductance way of stringing up enough lytics or something to form your DC link at 1600V smile. It would be a step backwards to use these devices at anything less than 1300V id say, if you just want to use 240VAC line doubled, then get some CM600s or CM300s off ebay. Not to say that you *cant* run your parts at 650V, its just not very good utilization of what you have.

If you're a student, I can send you some 30A IXYS Gate drivers and a core. These should work perfectly for your set-up.
