Ballasting.

Okay so im planning on making a quad MOT stacl and i want it for drawing arcs. not so much powering something, would i do better ballasting it on the low voltage side or the high voltage side? thanks.

well, on the low voltage side, you will need a hefty ballast that will withstand the current, on the HV side you can use a mot or two's secondary to limit the current, personally I would throw some PFC caps on the primary for such a stack.
as for primary ballasting, a large mot core with 12 AWG wire wrapped around it usually does it, you can space a part of the core to varry the inductance, also for the HV side, you can short the primary of the mot if you want more current draw. (the limiting MOT's primary)

I would prefer to ballast it on the low voltage side, as it is easier to adjust the current compared to the high voltage side, I never had too much luck using MOTS on the low voltage side for limiting, as they will either limit the current too much, giving me a small tiny ball like spark, or do nothing at all and have no spark. so I like to take a large mot core, with adjustable spacing, and winding the 12awg wire, this method generaly works for my stuff, but some cooling will be nessasary, so the ballast doesn't overheat

Thanks! i was already planning to have PFC in place on the primary, ballasting the beast is my only problem now, as far as i can see ;)
