Hi guys,

I don't have a scope(yet) so its REALLY hard to tune one.. but Im hoping someone could also answer this theoretically.

#1> lets say the secondary + topload "measures" at 250KHz (using JAVATC), and lets hang a wire on top of the topload(simulating streamers), and again theoretically measure 240KHz, being detuned by the streamers. Is it right to TUNE the primary LC tank to THIS SAME freq(240KHz) also? or should I go a bit LOWER than 240KHz ?

btw, this is for my SMALL coil (3.2" x 8.2")...

do smaller coils detune "further down" compared to bigger ones?

Just move the primary tap until the system makes the largest arc with the least input power for given pulse width and rate. I've been doing it that way for 15 years and it hasn't let me down yet wink

Yes that is true you should tune it lower than the Fo so that when you start to throw arcs they pull the secondary circuit into tune.
(BTW I have a scope but don't use it for tuning) cheesey

Im talking about THIS

Link2

I hope this tuning is the same with DRSSTC?

Yes, you can tune the secondary this way for a drsstc. To measure the resonant frequency of your primary, however, you should have the capacitor in series with the primary, as normal. You connect one side of the signal generator to the capacitor, then the other side to a 10kohm resistor, to the primary. Then you measure across the signal generator output leads with the scope.

I wonder if the detuned resonant freq(with streamers) for SMALL coils is the same with bigger ones...

like the one shown in the video, it has 9Khz difference, I wonder how much with my small one.. maybe 4 or 5 KHz lower?

Im just wondering, I could come up with a signal generator and a freq counter, but I was hoping for a circuit w/c would act as a "signal" indicator(just like whats shown on the scope) ...something like a LED bar meter or something, just to indicate the signal level strength.. anyone done THIS?

possible to use a square wave gen? or sine wave gen is best? what is the voltage amplitude(shown on scope) when in resonance? few mV perhaps?

a JFET (gate as probE)and an LED perhaps.. or couple the output to a LED bargraph with adjustable scale? cheesey
