i am helping a friend with a project for his science of sound class and we decided to build an audio modulated tesla coil. i have been looking for a wiring diagram to run a ignition coil or flyback with the signal coming from an mp3 player or something of that sort. i havent had any luck finding a good schematic that works. if anybody has any plans for the driver circuit that they know works their help Would be Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

This is unrelated but would your name happen to be Brandan?
Just curious, if so we have a mutual friend!

no sorry this isnt brandon but if he figures his audio modulated coil out tell him to post! :)

i came across a similar design to the one below controlled by a 555 timer instead of an audio jack Does anybody have any opinions on wether this schematic below will work.

umm... I would say no that wouldn't work.

There is no primary oscillation source, you need a carrier freq that you then modulate with audio to get sound. I would go with a 555/MOSFET driven flayback, It makes a good sized arc (1 to 2 inches) is easy to build and all you have to do for audio modulation is send the audio in to pin 5 of the 555 timer.

This is a good exaple circuit ive built it once befor and it works ok:

Good Luck!

Thanks Good Child! This seems like exactly what i need and is simple enough.

just wondering, the connection from pin 7 on the 555 is connected to a 50k potentiometer on the +12v side and the wiper right?

Yea, that is right. You could just connect it to the wiper, which is connected to 12v, but we usually connect the wiper to one end of the pot. No real reason, really.

Yes that is right I don't know why we do that. Just looks nice I gess.
