As the title, how do you get a beautiful toroid?
I'm finding a way to make a perfectly shaped, smooth toroid, like John Freau's, but I don't have an expensive lathe and I don't want to pay to much to make my own one, is there any good idea?
I've found a way which seems quite good.

The best way i have found is to have John make one for you!
That man is a true craftsman! Most beautiful toroid work i have ever seen, and i have been a metal fabricator
since 1994. Aside from that, the best way as far as i am concerned (leave the masterpieces to the experts) you could
spin one and just take a lot of time and effort to sand it to perfection. But in all reality, Johns toroids are about as
reasonably priced as you can find. Exceptional quality, unmatched attention to detail, and all around perfect. I have tried
to source different manufacturers and there have been none that even come close. If you plan on doing them yourself,
just take your time and remember, "practice makes perfect" !!

I wonder if it is really important to have a smooth toroid surface or the corrugated aluminium ducting pipe is not so detrimental for TC efficiency.... mistrust

Well, I care not only its efficiency but also its appearance.

You mentioned that you evaluated (or at least examined) spun toroids from several other sources, and found their quality inferior to John Freau's very nice units.

Can you provide contact information for the other toroid manufacturers that you were able to locate? For some applications, a less than cosmetically-perfect toroid might be acceptable.

Herr Zapp

In my first post, I forgot to ask what the diameter and chord dimensions were for the toroids you evaluated fom these suppliers.

Did they provide a listing of the toroid sizes for which they currently had tooling on-hand?

4 X 13 is what i had and since gotten rid of. Butler claims to be able to make toroids up to 55" diameter.
I do not know what they have on hand for tooling but i do know that every one is considered "custom".
To me that means they have none on hand and they make it after you order it. I believe they will make any
size you ask for being as they are not already formed. You could email them and maybe get a list of "standard" sizes?
Of the two companies, i would say butler had a better product. Both of these companies were very hard to find!
The best bet is not to look for toroid manufacturers, instead for metal spinning. Thats what i did and it got easier to
find companies willing to whip up one part!
