What about putting a capacitor in parallel to the switch? I think that should work to kill the arc.

Yes, but sometimes the capacitor needs to be so big to kill the arc, that it welds the contacts together the next time you close the switch.

100 ohms in series with 0.05 ufd makes a good contact snubber. Resistor prevents contact weld. The use of "freewheeling" diodes across relay coils makes them release slowly by retarding flux build-down. This may be an issue with contact arcing.
