The one thing about those planar displays that made good in industry was the high visibility. They had a llife of about 3 years 24/7/365 and failed in annoying ways like the first 7 segments leds used when micro boards came out- one segment at a time.

I dont know how a NOS one would do- ours were two glass glates glued with the edge cement and may of leaked slowly.

Is there any old *relay* pinballs around? That would be a good.plc project. Strange how things go around. We hacked relay games in the 50's to make such things as multiple wire cable assembly testers. We got them from scrap dealers-pinballs were carted off in police raids and smashed up with axes. They must of been very evil then!

For the sake of this project i have read a bit about the history of pinball, and i was just amazed. Apparently, they were from the beginning considered a form of gambling, and thus higly illegal. The thought of police raids upon these harmless machines has me chuckling.

Because of this ban they became a sign of criminality and rebellion, and those who played were the badboys of the era. Nowadays the only people playing pinball are nostalgians and geeks tongue

Yeah, i'd love if this machine was operated by relays, then we could just connect our PLCs outputs directly to those relays. It isnt though, and since we didnt have access to any manual that could bring sense to the horrible tangle of wires we actually had to rip it all out and rewire the entire playfield. And that is a lot of wires.

It had a whole series of different operating voltages, it had four different voltage outputs in the range of 2-3V, one 5V rail, 5,5V, 20,3V, 25V, 43V and one around 180V, probably for the displays. All of them DC.

So we are simplifying thing a lot, 45V for the playfields solenoids, 24V for the PLC and the output relays (We are using solid state-relays for the flippers and bumpers, contactors for the rest) + the playfields lights and 5V for the score and credit counters.

If you end up wanting to get rid of the old displays I would love to maybe get one or two if that would be alright, I love vintage parts and gadgets.

The relay pinballs ran os 25 volts AC. Subbing a plc would be fun if you could duplicate the 'uniselectors' which were the brains. These were stepping relays , several poles, many steps. Something like dial telephone Strowger, but only single digit.l
