guys,

I got a couple questions:

#1 are lytics good enough (47uF 400V) to replace 470nF 400V MKT caps?

#2 does a 220nF MKT value have big difference in spark output compared to 680nF MKT?

thanks!

Schematic?
More information is needed.

oppps!!! sorry for lack of info.. those are the CAPS as "midpoint" for DC bus voltage on half-bridge IGBTs/ or MOSFETs :)

the ones that are driving the primary coil of an dr/sstc.

I would use at least 1-2uF for these caps, when you have e.g. 20 amp primary current at 200kHz (mid-sized SSTC, assuming 230-240V mains), this will result in 72 volts AC across 220nF which can no longer be called DC block imo cheesey

(Steve W., have to copy the schema and edit a bit cheesey hope you dont mind )

ok here is the schema...

1265882783 2315 FT84002 Fbsstcsch3

and IM using MMCs for it(shown in upper right corner)... and gets pretty HOT!

what capacitance value should I be using here? is 500V ok enough? btw, my DR resonates close to 200KHz area...

tomorrow I will be buying LOTS of 100nF 400V MKPs... maybe the unequal capacitance values is NOT a good IDEA?

No need for the 'mid-point' capacitors, just use the 12.3nF capacitor to the coil, other end of the coil to 0v.

uhmm like this?

1265929345 2315 FT84002 Fbsstcsch3 2

There would be a "current path" for Q1 going to 0V.. but how about Q2? since it connected also to 0V..

btw, my mmc DC blocking caps seem OK now (warm but not HOT!) when I repositioned my breakout point to the "center top" of my torroid...streamers are more thicker than when the breakout point was at the "edge" of the torroid(the streamers where kinda thin and mmc dc blocking caps where HOT).. IMO was kind of inefficient?
