I am looking for a quick and dirty way to ignite a potato cannon from a distance without a complicated reload or a 110VAC source.

My idea was to convert 9VDC to 110VAC by attaching one terminal to a 110:9 transformer and the other to the end of a stranded wire and brush it against a file. This should give some really poor quality AC but, it should be good enough to drive a 2KV MOT and produce an arc.

I must have a cheap and reliable way to remotly ignite mostly for my own safety since I undoubtedly will try stupid dangerous fuels eventually.

What i would suggest is taking a magneto from an old lawn mower, weed wacker, or other small engine. You can wind a primary on a random part of the iron core, maybe about 10 turns or 20 gauge, and discharge a capacitor into it. The capacitor size does not really matter too much. I did this once, with a capacitor charged to maybe 24v and around 100uf, and i got a spark like 3/4 inch long. I used that for my spud cannon. You could use a few series 9v batteries. The higher the voltage, the better.

If you can, just use some high voltage wire, or some wire that is far from anything it could arc from, and use a piezoelectric BBQ ignitor. You can run a couple wires out wherever, and you have virtually unlimited ignitions without needing a power supply. And, it is small and reliable. cheesey

Good luck, and be careful!

Hmm you could just buy Link2 for $6.50. Just connect a 12v battery a spark plug and a switch and you should be good to go.

put a spark plug in your canon and use a standard ignition coil and use a 2n3055 ignition ciol circuit with a 12v motercycle battery

-camera flash charger with a smaller cap +spark gap to discharge into a pulse transformer/ ignition coil or even a flyback
-small DST flyback driver
-piezo igniter (I have run these attached to a few meters of wire and seemed to work ok)

I will probably go with the lawnmower ignition coil method since the shipping is too high for me.

Well, you can get the BBQ ignitor from hardware stores. Or, at least you can down here.

They are rather expensive though. I would pay the $6.50+$7sh first since they are about $12

You could also use a small light bulb and break the glass.
