Cheers buddy.. I hear most people from that town have evacuated and there's a few guys locking themselves in the coolroom of the supermarket (without the cool, I hope) to keep an eye on the damage and fires etc after the storm goes through.

Peter and Jim, I hope you guys aren't travelling north any time soon ^^

I happen to live in Darwin (population of 100,000), and it was expected last night that Monica would tear right through us. Everyone had braced themselves and some of us were prepared to either go to a cyclone shelter or just leave the town alltogether.

Some things like canned foods, spring water, and bread had sold out completely, and you couldnt even buy batteries at the supermarkets.

Right now it is moving slightly south of its forecasted path. Its okay now though, the cyclone weakened to a category 2 overnight, and we are experiencing some gales here right now, but nothing really. The famous Kakadu National Park is being lashed with 100km/h gales as I type this.

The town of Maningrida, about 300km east of us, was hit pretty hard when Monica was still category 5. They evacuated 350 people (out of 358 total population...). So we are all cool here.. I think I'll go take some photos while it skims us.

I'm too far south for the likings of beasts like that.

So what did the other eight do?

I'm several thousand km south. From the latest forecasts I don't think Monica will give much of a blow. Gosh I almost wrote "job" after that last sentence. Fortunately no one from the USA reads this thread.

The other eight people went to hide in the hospital storage room.

Its weakened again, into a category 1, and ironically it changed its path and is going right above Darwin as I type, except its just a bit of a breeze really. They're predicting it to increase in severity as it crosses over into the timor sea. Bad luck for Western Australia, perhaps.

Thankfully I am (now) living thousands of kays away. Have been through a couple of nasty ones though.
