Hey i was just wondering if anyone on here knew, which im sure at least one of you does, how to open those old can type iggy coils? i have 3 left and i wanted to run two of them in bipolar configuration, but ill be putting a lot of power and current through them, so tid be pushing the insulation to the max. so i was just going to run them under oil, and maybe vacuum. thanks.

You need to unscrew the fastener inside the EHT terminal, then carefully peel the swaged metal lip of the can off the plastic rim, and the whole lot should lift out. Edit: drain the oil out the EHT first for minimum mess!

These coils are already insulated in oil. You can improve the insulation out of the case by putting the whole coil under more oil. Forget vacuum insulation. Too difficult. More practical is to use high pressure insulation. The breakdown voltage is directly proportional to the pressure. But oil is simpler.

On the topic, what spark length can a typical ignition coil stand?
Discharge a film cap into the primary and you just might find out . I have seen people do like 6 inch sparks with a couple iggys. That does not necessarily mean any kind of CW, but i bet you could do 6 inches with a single coil if you discharge a cap into the primary. It would not last long...
I have taken iggy coils apart. I just used a pair of wire cutters, and i cut along the metal lip a few places to make it easy to peel back. I did not take the screw out. It connects the plastic top of the housing to the transformer itself, but to take the transformer off of the plastic you also have to disconnect the primary terminals. Just unscrew the nuts, the bolt should drop through, i think.
