Instead of fly-back you can use iggy coil(s) and rectify the output using strings of diodes. 12V is all that you need for such approach and the efficiency should be fine if you stay below 5Khz...

It might be possible to stretch the ouput pulse from a piezo-electric BBQ igniter by placing L in series with the spark gap.

According to Evans, K.A., Power generation efficiency of piezoelectric crystals (1984) "It was found experimentally that X-cut quartz crystals with nominal resonant frequencies of 1 MHz possess an energy conversion efficiency of approximately 95 percent."

My knowledge of this subject is very limited, but the great economy of parts might make such a device attractive.

With the igniter, would it be mechanically driven? As far as I know that's the only way to work those things. I like that idea though.

I have a small 240Vac:12Vdc to 10kV 10W power supply I built for my HeNe tube.
It's just a 555 driving a mosfet (forgot which one) and a small monitor flyback transformer etc. It uses one of the original windings as a primary.
A simple reliable circuit I can recommend.
There's no feedback on mine though, just a pot to set the constant power level.

As you may have found, HV capacitors smooth out dc ripple nicely
but release their stored energy really loudly at the slightest provocation
- unless you add some hv resistive ballast.

Yeah I'm almost positive I'm going to use a ballast resistor. What value do you think? 1M? 10M?
