9 volts - 100Kv ignition coil.

Hello all, i recently purchased a small 9 volt powered stun gun. for the sake of pulling it apart. but i wanted mainly try using it to power other thing, eg an ignition coil. so replacing the pulse transformer in it with my epoxy filled ignition coil. and having that under oil. i flicked the switch and was able to get up to 10-11cm sparks, but there was alot of insulation failures on the wires and such coming out of the ignition coil. all from the 9 volt battery. this would be a good circuit for someone to use for ignition coil drivers at low voltages. all thats on the pcb is one diode. two resitors, a small cross shaped spark gap, one capacitor, and a mosfet..
just thought id throw this out there.

I'm a little iffy on using stun guns for one reason: they are supposed to change operating status after striking a spark.
Stun guns have two phases, the names of which escape me but are easily understood. The first phase is the high voltage, it is what makes the spark and strikes a conductive path through the target. The second phase has the voltage drop from extremely high, to just around 500V max. This is the loading phase in which work is really done by the stun gun.

You might check with a scope to see if it is trying to transition stages and affect your output, but your gun's design does sound pretty simple and convenient and something similar to what I thought about before learning about the dual stage configuration, maybe it is some one off without a dual stage design? (I personally was under the impression that stun guns were required to have dual phases by law, but I could be proven wrong).

interesting.

the cross shaped spark gap is fairly standard, see Link2 :)

its very similar to a camera flash in that it charges to a set voltage, the spark gap breaks down and dumps the capacitance through the gap into the load (in this case the primary of the output coil)

you might also find a "trigatron" tube used here, as these can be fired precisely. this sort of supply is used in bigger camera flashes, and the igniters in some YAG lasers.

there called 'Arc phase" and then "loading phase" only the expensive ones use this topology, most cheap ones are just a high voltage pulsing signal.
