I'm looking for some advice. I'm thinking of building a 1-2 kVA DRSSTC and running it off a portable AC generator that puts out around 5 kVA. Since the generator cost me around $600, I'm not too keen on frying it. Does anyone have experience with running a DRSSTC from a generator like this? Are there any special issues I need to address like keeping hash from getting from the coil back to the generator or putting some kind of isolation between the two?
Any information would be appreciated...

I don't see why it should't work just make shure that there is a breaker between the tesla and altenator in case of a fault. The other thing is surge from the tesla in operation and startup. Just make shure that the peak current isn't to much for the altenator. part of the surge on acivation can be taken care of with a soft start and the larger your cap bank should smooth the operating pulses.

IIRC N.Tesla caused a power station generator/alternator to burn up due to high-frequency currents - this is one of two failure mechanisms I can imagine, just add two line filters to the ac line - one 'facing' each way. One to protect your TC from any 'nasties' on the line from the generatorand one to prevent hf currents getting back to your generator from your TC.
The next most likely failure mode would be emi/rfi from the TC arcs 'upsetting' the electronic speed controller in your generator - distance between generator and TC is the easiest solution.
