If resistance between gate and source is much less then the value of the resistance in parallel to the zeners (I assume that's ~10k), the transistor is dead. Measure each of them seperately, placing the positive probe of the AVO meter on the gate of the transistor.
Actually, I guess it's the one on the right. You've connected the protective zener (on the right) from source to source (apparently). Thus, rendering it useless. The orange wire (cathode of the zener) should be connected to gate.

Andri, well spotted!! I built this a couple of years ago and although it hasn't had much use, its been fine, but you're correct, I have misplaced the orange wire and put it on the source instead of the gate!
I'm glad I uploaded a photo now! I will replace the right FET and move the zener wire and let you know how I get on!

Andri, thank you so much. You was correct, the right MOSFET has a gate to source resistance of 55 ohms! I put a new one in and put the zener in the correct place and its just like I remember it, nice flaming arcs :)
I have only ran it from 12 to 14v input, so I guess when I ran it on 24v the other week a spike killed it because of my misplaced connection.

Hehe, no problem. The Mazilli driver is completely symmetrical. I just checked the the symmetry. Asymmetry is easy to spot. Also, the fact that you ran it on 24V when it failed was a hint.
