The N Ray incident was actually not a hoax but rather an example of self delusion on a rather large scale. Blondlot was a distinguished and accomplished physicist, certainly not a hack. Great example how human psychology can muck things up and why good experimental design is important.

I have a friend who claimed that he'd seen Jesus while he was out driving one dark night. He felt sad and alone, when he suddently saw a divine light from heaven. But of course it turned out that he had just been speeding past a speedtrap. Our will and feelings are strong enough to twist our percetion of truth, and this is something everyone should be aware of.
