My favourite way is using LM3914, it has very sensitive input so you can use very large divider resistors there (so there is apsolutely no way that HV will burn something). And don't forget a cool array led.

You still need to derive a Vcc source for the LM3914, so you would be right back where you started with, dropping lots of voltage and dissipating lots of heat.
