I'm in the process of acquiring a Sony Reader Touch Edition, and I'm buying/downloading books, magazine archives, and textbooks.

The reader supports a number of open ebook formats, as well as PDFs, MS Word (.DOC), and a few others. It supports up to 32GB SD cards, but I suspect I'll probably put a 16G card in it to start with.

So far I've got:

Elektor Magazine archive
Circuit Cellar Magazine archive
Everyday Practical Electronics Archive
Approximately 1 gajillion electronics/RF/physics textbooks and references

I'm looking for suggestions for some good non-fiction reading, magazines to check out, reference material, maybe even some fiction, though I'm pretty picky in that category. Not much for sci-fi or the like, and I think the last fiction I read and really liked was State of Fear by Michael Crichton.

Anybody got ideas? Read anything really great recently?

-Dave

In the way of fiction, there's always the classics such as For Whom the Bells Tolls. Personally, I've really enjoyed all the Hemingway that I've read.

For Science Fiction, try "A Canticle for Leibowitz".

For essays, try "The Demon-Haunted World" by C. Sagan, and "Living Within Limits" by G. Hardin.

i have reason to believe that the entire UK shipment of these is "misplaced" somewhere in Poland.
Looks like someone bought up the entire stock :(

so if you can't get one then that could be the reason.

Let us know how the PDF support on that thing turns out. I heard that the older Readers couldn't render all PDF files properly.

Here are some scientific e-books that I enjoyed. All free except for one. In honesty I should point out that they are crappy scans of old books, leading to large files that an e-book reader might choke on. I haven't provided links because some of them are available in different versions. Just google the title and author.

"The Mathematical Theory Of Relativity", Arthur Eddington. Warning, this is extremely math heavy, but it does what it says on the tin, explaining the theory of relativity and the math behind it in full detail, from an authoritative source who was in on it from the start. Even if you don't understand it (I didn't) you can impress people at parties by blabbing about tensor calculus and so on.

"The Stanford Two-Mile Accelerator", R.B. Neal et al. This is a huge technical tome that describes the design, building and operation of the Stanford linear accelerator.

"The Science of JET", J. Wesson et al. A discussion of nuclear fusion research based around the JET tokamak.

"Ignition! An informal history of liquid rocket propellants", John D. Clark. This book offers an enticing brew of hard science, big explosions and plenty of casualties... Like 4hv back in its golden age :) This one is not in the public domain, but I found it on a file-sharing network.

"The Mask Of Sanity", Harvey Cleckley, MD. A dramatized account of Cleckley's work with his 13 most psychopathic patients. I found this fascinating, but someone else I recommended it to thought it was awful. YMMV.
