hello, im somewhat new to the herf. i have several magnetrons laying around. im looking to do some cool plasma experiments with a herf. i really cant find much online about this topic. first off im wondering if anyone knows what the angle of spread is when the microwaves come out of the tip of the magnetron? and secondly im looking for some advice about focusing the microwaves into a narrow beam. also what kind of range does a typical magnetron have? i know it is a good idea to protect myself. would it be sufficient to take some screen and ground it out to serve as a 'faraday cage'? TY

Why do you want to harm other people?

thats not funny, i have no intention to harm anyone. it strictly in the name of science. im into high voltage and im expanding to microwaves. nothing illegal

if you really want to get into microwaves, I suggest you do some serious research regarding antenna design and radiation patterns, the ARRL makes a good microwave transmitter book that has a lot on design of such transmitters, maybe it would be a good place for you to start
many book stores like borders or barnes and noble carry at least something from the ARRL, or if you find it on their website you could have it sent to the store

if you have a hard time finding it (and when I found mine, it had been sitting on a shelf for so long they dropped the price from $30 to $5) it may be out of print, I might be willing to part with mine as I don't do much in terms of microwaves

safety first, and while you say you care about it, and I do not doubt that you do, make sure you understand that there is more than just basics with microwaves as they can do a lot more damage!

-Jimmy

p.s: what experiments do you plan to perform with a focused beam?

I completely agree that there is nothing funny about directed energy weapons - as wikipedia amongst many other sources defines HERF.

the reason i was looking for a beam is basically because i dont know what angle the waves are comming out of the magnetron. so with a beam i can rest assured(along with other safety measures) that the beams arent going everywhere. thats all. Im sure my fellow science and high voltage enthusiasts understand this type of stuff sets us apart from many others.

these are just some examples of things im interested in doing:

HERF is defined as High Energy Radio Frequency, it is not strictly used in a sense of weapons - that wikipedia article is about weapons which use herf, not about herf itself

as for the experiments linked to by the OP, it demonstrates that this is absolutely not a toy, but it is most certainly not a weapon unless special design considerations were used

I do not recommend such experiments to the inexperienced, but please do not be rash in classifying this as a weapon until you know more about how it is being used and how it is being constructed

@OP: from the experiments you linked to, I suggest you get a good foundation in Electro-Magnetic Theory before trying such experiments, and for the love of god do not try it in the fashion that the youtube videos show... that is just downright dangerous

you would need to consider shielding, grounding, exposure times, energy power, frequency of devices, antenna design - and since magnetrons can be dangerous, if you do not have experience with the above I suggest you wait

1. Do you think these people thought doing these things was a good idea?
2. Do you think doing these things is a good idea?

If your answer is yes, then for the love of god don't do it. If no, then just don't do it. (Bit of a catch-22, ain't it?)

i apologize if i gave the wrong impression by calling it a HERF. i just called it that because of what i gathered online.

I have been experimenting with HV for 2 years and hold an ham radio license. I would not touch anything with emits HERF with an ERP of 200 watts with a bargepole. Good luck.
