Last summer I had my first tesla coil running, but it far below impressive. I was rushed to get it done before school and it could be better. So now it is time for round two. I'm trying to focus on cost and tuning. The primary coil is my biggest limiter. I want to keep the length below 50ft. So I put together a Wintesla file and I was wondering what you guys think of it(attachment). I just want to make sure everything is as good as possible before I delve into this project.

BTW- anyone have some Cornell-Dubilier 942C20P1K: 2000volt at .10 microfarad?

You've got the right idea, however you're going to run into some problems:

I see that you have set the primary at 14.4 turns and that you have 50ft of primary wire (refrig tubing I presume?). When you get the tubing, it won't come exactly 50ft, so you're cutting it pretty close. Secondly, due to the variables that are introduced when you actually build the thing, I would suggest adding at least another turn to help with tuning. This brings you 5ft over the 50ft limit.

Secondly, if you use this design, your coil will be underpowered. 12Kv at 30mA will only do about 6-7nF of tank capacitance, you require ATM at least ten. Therefore you will stress your NST or you will be underpowered. You can add more inductance to the primary to get around this, but you will be around 18 turns.

There are several things you can do:
1. increase power to the coil by adding another NST. I don't figure you want to do that so we'll move on.
2. make the secondary smaller.
3. add more wire to the primary.

I would make the secondary smaller. Here's why:
If you had enough power, the primary length problem could be solved by adding more capacitance. You don't have enough power to drive the extra capacitors, so you will be adding more expensive copper wire to the primary or another NST. 360W is only going to give 20-22" sparks and a smaller secondary would look better. I'd use something like 3-3.5" pipe and scale accordingly. You'll now want a 1:5 ratio too. Have you bought your wire yet? I'd use something more like 29-30AWG, although 26 will be sufficient if you already have it. I've got a paper on my site all about secondaries Link2 if you want more info.

Hint: posting the specs just out in the open, and not requiring download, will get you more replys. wink

I'd play with those figures, and see what you get. Then come back if you have more q's.

Hope that helps...

If you need a lot of primary turns, go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a few of those 17ft rolls of spring bronze weather strip and some adhesive polyurethane weatherstrip stuff.
