Hello all, I know that this subject came up some years ago here, but I just cant seem to find it. I would like to skip building a flyback driver and simply buy one. I remember reading that people were having success using electronic ballasts as the driver for the flyback. Some of them are capable of up to 200W and run around 20khtz.

I've had success driving flybacks with those little compact fluorescent light drivers. Those were only around 20 watts though and had a tendency to die really quickly. I also tried one of those black rectangular ballasts for the long tube fluorescent lights, but those seem to be nothing more than a typical iron cored transformer and it was useless.
One of these solid state dimable ballasts "might" have some use.

So why do these tend to bug out? Is it spikes from the flyback, or simply over powering them? If spikes, would a snubbing circuit be in order to protect the thing? As for limiting current and voltage, would increasing the turns on the flyback primary be a good start? Matt
