Some wireless chipsets just don't have a Linux driver. I seem to remember there is a piece of software that lets you use the Windows driver under Linux. It's called ndiswrapper or something.
Before you mess with that, check that the problem isn't just that the driver wasn't supplied with Ubuntu. Even finding out what wireless chipset you have can be a hassle. One of the best wireless FAQs for linux is written by Jean Tourrilhes of Hewlett Packard:
I forget how to identify the chipset, but that site should tell you how to do it, or a google search for your laptop's name plus "wireless linux"
If you do need to install extra drivers, you'll soon get tired of having to reinstall them every time you boot, so maybe it's time to outgrow the live CD and install linux to your hard drive?

Looking at the properties for the device in windows should give you the name of the driver and some other information that should help formulating helpful google searches.
It may turn out to be impossible to get it to work or it may turn out the be some simple tinkering.

Sounds like you using the "brezey badger" release of Ubuntu (5.1) This has some issues with wireless cards. It took me like 2 hours and loads of restarts just to get a D-LinkDWL G650+ to work. I finally got it to work by using the Windows drivers that came with the card and ndiswrapper. Just google, for loads of information on using ndiswrapper. You'll be lucky if you can get it to work with the live CD. I think you'll have to do an install.
