Hello
i'm new to HV elektronics (in english language)
and i have few questions about sgtc

first i am planing to built this TC Link2

i already have MOT and gona go to bui other parts
but i have no idea what does "off-the-shelf choke" stands for and what it does in tc.
next: i have 0,3mm diameter coper vire and gona vind it on 100mm PVC pipe will it be good? like 1200 - 1300 windings, also can i use polyester resin instead of epoxy? because its cheaper and i have about 0,5l in my posses. wont it eat coat on vire?

thanks
Giedrius

That would be a good number of winds for a DRSSTC or SSTC but for a SGTC I would use under 1000 winds. As for the polyester resin I don't know if it will work, I have never used it but I do know that polyurethane works well to but not as well epoxy (It's just cheaper).

And welcome to the forum!

Off-the-shelf means something you can buy in a store.

I used four chokes (inductors) meant for filtering power supplies in tube audio amplifiers, they cost about £6 each from Maplin. They were only available in the UK, and they don't sell them any more. I've since dismantled the coil and reused the chokes in a tube amp. smile

I've also seen people use MOTs modified to include an air gap in this circuit. Two or three in series usually does it, any fewer and the rotary gap will suffer from power arcing.

This doesn't really make sense though: if you have several MOTs, why are you building my design? The whole point of it is that it only needs one MOT.

thanks for explanaition
i have 2 halogen ligts induktors (or something like that, looks like transformer but only with single vindings, no secondary)
they are rated at 40W.
if i canet them in series, can use them insted of that choke in scheme?

thanks

Sorry, I don't know.

(Did you mean metal halide? Even then, I don't know.)

does balancing capacitors and rezistors are necessary on diode chains? or can i just use plain diodes without that parts?
