I recently got a hold of a small, used x-ray head. It works, but I'd like to monitor the tube current. On my SS White, I simply place a mA meter between the "M" and "G" terminals, however on this unit that doesn't appear to be the case and I get no mA reading. I know the unit is working from some other testing, but how might the filament be measured if not across these terminals? On this unit, as opposed to the SS WHite, there are four marked terminals, X, P, M, F. No G, so I assumed the ground was simply the case and tried the meter across the case and M to no avail.

Thanks for any help.

Jon

Dear Jon,

I'm not quite sure what an "SS White" is - but it sounds to me like something due to hit a berg and go down at any moment.

You will not thank me for saying this, and it may sound harsh, but your knowledge of X-ray technology seems to me to be far too slim to experiment with X-rays - quite certainly the most hazardous interest permitted on a responsible public forum like 4HV.

It's good to be interested in the rays, but if you can't sort out a few simple connections, then you are not really a player, and would probably be a danger to yourself and others. Tell us about your shielding arrangements so far - how many kilos of lead have you bought? What sort of dosimeters are you using? How are they calibrated?

Hello:

Some dental x-ray units do not measure the ma these are "set ma" machines. In other words the manufacturer sets the ma once at the factory, then the only user variable setting is the KV, and the length of exposure. I have seen some ultra cheap units which even had a set KV, and a set ma. These are factory set for 70KV, and the only thing that you can change is the time which = the quantity of x-rays generated. All adjustable machines have either a HV to ground for low frequency machines, or a low current /voltage return from the multiplier for high frequency machines.

The question without a schematic is which is what? You could try to reason it out based on various measurements like inductance etc. Sadly I cannot offer more than this to solve the problem, good luck and be safe :)

can you post some pics of them and resistive measure between terminals?

i can help you if you provide me some more informations.
