Would this thing actually work? Has anyone tried it?

That looks familiar. I think I saw something like that in Tesla's original notes.

What site did it some from? Are there experimental results?

Very interesting! Do you have a link with more info on that setup?
I would be up for trying to make one!

It was on pupman.com with a bunch of unrelated stuff. No info on if it's been tried or not.

As I understand it, the difference between what's shown, and simply a large topload with a wire between the two sections, is the variable conduction available between the two halves.

It asserts correctly that a spark between the two would happen much more quickly than streamer formation from the toroid. However, for this to be useful, it means the spark has to jump at the right time, after the streamer has hit a ground.

It seems that the choice of the resistor between the two halves could be critical. The value has to be low enough to charge the sphere with each half cycle of TC operation, so at 100s of kHz. However, it's got to be big enough to inhibit transfer of charge while streamer formation is taking place.

With DC high voltage terminal, say from a VDG or CW multiplier, there would be no difficult time constant problem. I don't see how it works with a TC, unless I have analysed it wrongly.

I see it the same way.

Do you have any guess for resitor value for a 160Khz coil (Mohms or Kohms) ? I can easily try this koncept ...

That's Ken Herrick's concept, which was discussed on the Tesla Coil mailing List some time ago. Ken's original schematic can be seen at:
Link2

Quickly reviewing the TCML archives, it sounds like Ken did build and test this concept, with positive results, and posted a photo on the old Hot-Streamer.com site.

However, I could not find the file in question (Link2 on the classictesla.com
"mirror" of the hot-streamer site; does anyone have a copy of this photo archived anywhere?

Regards,
Herr Zapp

Aren't these extra spheres just various forms of lumped-constant L & C tuned circuit?
