I recently aquired a solid state NST thats rated for 5K5V 27mA and 29KHz. Would this be really good for a small 'Coil? Would the design process be the same as for a traditional SSTC? I think that this would be great for a portable unit for demos and such.

Honestly that would work pretty badly with a TC. It probably has GFI protection, will die easy in TC use and the high frequency ac would suck at charging the cap.

Like with flyback driven coils, first rectify then smooth, and use a small rotary gap, in your TC primary circuit. I have had fair results with small flyback driven coils with rotary gaps.
