Hi all, I'm making a new coilgun, now 7 stages is ready, going to make ~18 stages at all. Projectile 8mm dia, 9,4g weight, speed ~53 m/s, ~13,5j. Caps 400v 390mkf Video:

You said you're shooting for 18 stages. So when the projectile gets going nice and fast toward the later stages, how are you going to shorten the pulse? Smaller coil? Less capacitance? Higher charge voltage (probably not the best option)?
I hope you get all those stages, I've always wanted to do the same but never got around to it.

wow that's impressive! Good job! What's your efficiency now? I found that adding a little bit of a delay on the trigger for the first stages improves performance. I just added a small capacitor across the output of the photogate; more capacitance the longer the delay.
