Greetings,

I've been reading on this forum for a week or so. I must say I am quite impressed by some of the projects posted here and how knowledgeable many of the posters are.

Yesterday I put together a tiny spark gap Tesla coil. I am pretty happy with the results so I thought I would share a few images.

The secondary coil stands just over 3" tall including top-load. I am currently running it off of a 10kv furnace ignition transformer, though keeping it at about 6kv with a variac. The capacitor is a single .001 uF 10kv ceramic disc capacitor. The spark gap is a static spark gap, just the primary wire bent to almost touch the lead of the capacitor. The primary coil is 4 turns of 20 gauge insulated copper wire with several layers of electric tape between primary and secondary. The secondary coil is about 250 turns around a 1" diameter pill bottle.

Here are a few pics. I hope you enjoy.

Cool eric!

remember to be careful not to get "bitten", or become part of the HV primary circuit. It only takes 10ma to cause fibrillation (i think), aka kill you.

good luck

Nope. 10ma causes pricking - stuck holding (DC)
70-100ma = fibrillation

Woohoo! charts! :D Anyways, Nice coil there! looks nice and small :)

A very good point. I'm very careful about the primary circuit and always point out to anyone who I show Tesla coils to which parts are the most dangerous and make sure they acknowledge before running the coil. It never hurts to get reminders though so I appreciate it. :)

Thanks! There's definitely room for improvement (bigger topload, better spark gap, varnish secondary, etc..) but it sure is fun the way it is.

Cheers,
Eric
