so, i finally got around to building that awesome spudgun i have been wanting for so long. chamber fan, pure butane fuel meter, laser sight, firing timer, microcontroller based chronograph mounted on the barrel? all that kind of stuff. the problem is: i need a small ignition circuit! ignition coils and flybacks are simply too big.
i'm planning on using a 13cm * 7cm * 4cm box with 2 9volt batteries for the chamber fan as the housing.
do you have any ideas on small circuits that will give off some nice at hot sparks/arcs that will fit in the box?

Modified camera flash circuit to discharge some capacitor into the chamber? Not super high voltage I supose but a discharge like that ought to ignite the gas, right?
Hurts alot on your fingers at least.. been zapped once, never really got back to that circuit again :D

by "discharging some capacitor into the chamber" i assume you mean the method with the really really closely spaced electrods, i have tried that before, but the electrodes are extremely sensitive. after about 5 shots, the electrodes need adjustment again and the charging time sucks

Discharge a somewhat small capacitor into a little pulse coil?
I have used a normal magneto from a weed wacker for a pulse coil. I wound a primary on some random part of the iron core, and discharge a small capacitor into it and it gave a couple inch spark. They are usually pretty small, and the charging circuit could be a camera charger, and try like 10uf or something. That would charge quick and probably be enough for half an inch spark.
That is what i would do. Just look for a trashed weed wacker.

I've used a small 9v battery powered grill ignitor very sucessfully. It came with a big cool looking red button and gives out successive pulses of probably 8kv at about 4 Hz for as long as you push the button. It definitely meets your size requirements too. I think I got it on eBay. A quick search returned this - which is similar but you could probably find it cheaper if you look around.

If you just need a spark to ignite a gas air mix from a finger operated trigger, you couldn't get much better than the mechanism out of a piezo type lighter.
