Think laterally....
I've only had to do this the once - I took the route that its easier and more accurate to opto-isolate (or galvanically isolate) digital signals. Therefore, I used an external ADC and isolated the control signals to it instead of relying on the ADC in the uP. Actually, not very expensive or difficult to do as the clock rates are typically only around 400kHz...

Many meters and opto-chips will punch through at >5kv.
