Why don't you just disable the power supply momentarily to let the SCR recover? Switchmode power supplies usually have a remote on/off input of some kind. If the SMPS was designed for capacitor charging, it should work out.
There is a forced commutation circuit developed for coilguns, called the V-Switch.
SCRs don't need reverse voltage to reset. When the current through a SCR drops below the holding current, after a certain time delay it will turn off, and any forward or reverse voltage appearing across it is a result of the turnoff, not the cause of it.
