Hello. I'd like to build a TC, a large one I'm not sure yet if it's going to be DRSSTC or SGTC. I would like to start from winding a secondary. I have 200mm diameter 1.6m long PVC pipe. The question is, is it possible (and is it a good idea at all) to wind such a large secondary suitable for working in both SGTC and DRSSTC topology? What is the best height-to-diameter ratio in DRSSTC and in SGTC, and what wire diameter should be used? As far as I know, in DRSSTC case the resonance should be as low as possible, and that means thin wire for more turns. On the other hand, thiner and longer wire = larger resistance and lower quality (Q of the resonator), and thiner wire = more turns/cm = more volts/cm = flashovers (?) So what wire would be the best?

Hi Karol
As far as I know, everything that makes DRSSTCs better makes SGTCs better too. A SGTC with a fat secondary and low resonant frequency should work fine. The only possible problem might be racing sparks, because the fat secondary naturally gives tighter coupling, which means lots of volts/turn at the bottom. You may have to loosen the coupling for smooth operation as a SGTC, but it's a lot easier to loosen it than tighten it.
The low resonant frequency in DRSSTCs is mostly for ease of switching, so that you can use slower IGBTs which will be cheaper.

OK, so I know that I can make a secondary suitable for both designs

But I could make the primary fatter too or in case of too tight coupling simply place the secondary a bit higher, right?
I have a big spool of 0.18mm magnet wire. I used it for winding my SSTC's secondary (h=300mm dia=110mm), but for this one it will probably be to thin (?) And what do you think about 80cm winding height?

Hey c4r0,
Should give you a nice and low frequency of ~50kHz without topload and go into the 20khz range with a decent sized topload. Would make the secondary great for some slower (cheaper ) bricks. :D Shouldn't be a problem either way, but it will certainly be great for a DRSSTC. But maybe wait for a better opinion, I do not have experience with large SGTCs nor DRSSTCs.
80cm with that wire does mean >4k turns though. You better have a winding jig prepared.

Well at a certaine point wire resistance becomes a critical factor. Since your putting lots of energy in heating your secondary. From what I've seen DRSSTC's range from 1800 to 2500 turns depending on the diameter since it's also a factor for wire length and thus wire resistance.
