Modulation of nonpolarized laser beam - how?

I am thinking that an argon plasma will absorb the Ar laser radiation in some % so it would be possible to modulate the beam, just passing it through a transversal discharge in argon (practically one or more argon tubes). Modulating the tube discharge will not affect the laser module (as the modulating the fillament current) and would be easier to make. But I dont know if the concept will work for sure.

This is the technique used by the Acousto-optic modulator 'AOM' I mentioned earlier, and the issue is that it only works with a beam polarized in the correct direction.

Thanks for your help guys. I have working RGY since yesterday :D Now I will check with not modulated beam if this argon is suitable for cooperation with red and green at these powers. If yes, I'll come back to the modulation problem. If not, I'll just use 405nm diode laser. I'm attaching a few pics of my setup, the last pic shows the argon laser too :)
