Apparently, this is what Tesla's original coil looked like. Is there some reason (besides difficulty of winding the coils) that people don't make them like this anymore?

I can't comment on this particular design, but I recall seeing original circuits by Tesla where both primary and secondary were submerged - horizontally - in oil (or wax - I forget)
I do know that we have a few members who have copies of all Tesla's early work, and am sure they'll chip in soon to share their knowledge.

It all comes down to geometry and the materials that were present at the time. Tesla has done both types of coils, pancake, and solenoid secondaries, and it was likely just the standard progression of design. The solenoid is used more now as its just much simpler to wind. Thats all.
