So I ended up having a new tank made from scratch. It's 16 in diameter and 36 in tall. The walls are 1/8th in carbon steel and the two end caps are flat but 1/2 in thick. The guy building it is worried about the main cylinder collapsing under vacuum but I don't think that it's a problem. What do you guys think? It's going to be at a pressure of no lower than 10^-6 Torr.

I'm sure you realize that the mechanical stress at even 10^-9 torr is hardly different from that at 10^+1 or 10^+2 torr!

Not to scare you. I -think- you're probably OK, but someone should run the numbers if you don't yet have the knowledge to do so. Decades ago, Gary Settles made a supersonic wind tunnel as a high school science fair project (featured in Scientific American - The Amateur Scientist column). His storage vessel was an evacuated water heater tank. See last reference at
