The bandwidth required for such a camera must be incredible. FPGAs and quite interesting hardware, thats for sure.
The downside is that you need extremely intense light, to the point where photographing living things is hazardous for them. You also need a constant light source (so AC lights flicker, so DC fluorescent or similar lights?).
I know nik has one of those consumer level high speed cameras with some cool shots from it. I hope more hardware like that becomes accessible for the amateur scientist.

Very nice; thanks for pointing it out.
Along those lines, I'd always liked this video where camera follows a gun-fired penetrator (not a rocket!) in flight. Not sure what is actively discarded at 0:14.
Clearly the video capture involved a tracking mirror, like the galvanometers used by some of our laserists. At the limit of mirror deflection, we lose track of the flying projectile but can see the tracker "ring" for a few cycles. Today I found a commercial product for just that application: It's an accessory offered by a maker of million-FPS cameras. Enjoy!

And for the less militaristic, the insects of Ultraslo. When this ladybug spreads its wings, it needs to let them firm up for a while before starting the engine.

I have found AC lighting and light intensity to be a problem even with my 300, 600, 12000fps camera. I was thinking about feeding my 500w halogen lamp with filtered DC but over the summer I was shooting outside only where flicker isn't a problem.

you have a consumer level that does 12000?, or is that a typo - the casios, which are the only consumer levels I know of, one of which I have, can only do up to 1200
as for lighting, I use Studio Hot Lights made for cinematography and the like, no problems
florescent will not work because they flicker, and AC lights (normal Tungsten filaments) do not flicker as much as you would think because the Filament does not cool down enough to be very noticable, but it still is to a degree but enough consistency to work with
Stadium lights at sports events are absolutely HORRIFIC I must say, I've been having to deal with them while trying to get footage for my School Teams!
what also could work are strobes for their particular case, because the duration of the flash is much longer than that of the actual event and the source is constant throughout the course of the flash, but my guess is that they used an enormous number of Hot Lights
