Never done oil Transformers before, so a few things...

1) what oil too use, hydraulic, mineral, motor oil, etc.
2) what can i expect in terms of volts per mill roughly.
3) Pressure just in case of internal arcing/heating, is there a danger of bursting?
4) my transformer bobbin is like finn hammer's et al.

Also, everything else you can think of about oil...

TY,
-Patrick

Hello Again:

Here is a starting point:

Volts/Mil = Allow for 1- 2mm space per 10KV minimum in good known oil, more space is always better, I use 5mm oil /10kV min in my projects. (Destructive Test Any Unknown Oil)

Oil = Use transformer oil, mineral oil, or some highly purified organic oils like castor oil. I would like to try the organic ones but I have 80 liters of transformer oil in my garage so its just easy to go outside and get some. Maybe Harry would be nice enough to re-post some info on this we should do our part for the earth when possible.

Pressure = Just take a deep breath and let it out real slow, it will be fine :)

Bobbin = Any oil completable material, you can use the mineral oil, or kerosene entry in the compatibility charts for comparison if transformer oil is not listed.

Container = The fancy food storage containers at the department store with the silicon seals work great for small projects, a small empty paint bucket with snap top lid works for medium projects. Silicon sealant, the one without acetic acid works great for anchoring, and for sealing (Use before and let set before you add the oil!!!) All these containers are flexible so "pressure" is not an issue. You can also put the transformer inside a section of PVC pipe, glue on the end caps, then fill with oil via a small tapped hole with a seal screw to close. To be real fancy you can put a small inflated rubber ball inside, it will compress under pressure.

The rest is elementary, blaze a new trail and tell us about it later, it will give us a forum topic tomorrow :)

Hi there Patrick smile

Partly for environmental reasons, and just as much for economic ones, there is a growing tendency for HV transfromers to be filled with vegetable oil - i.e, combinations of sunflower seed oil, and rape seed oil.

Your transformer may be conveniently housed in a plastic sandwich box, etc.

Ideally, you should suck any residual air bubbles out of the device with a vacuum (in a modified pressure cooker,
for example)

All the best,

Harry

Just thought I would throw this in.
DO NOT use hotmelt glue for anchoring if you plan on using mineral oil. I did that with an xray transformer and found that mineral oil seems to eat the glue over time.
