Making a lightning detector?

I made a lightning charge build-up detector (see picture) it activated a sonalert to warn me to get back into my vehicle. I used it when I'd be up on mountain-top ridges trying to get video and photos of lightning bolts. It sounded off twice though neither time there was a nearby strike. The antenna was a ~15cm pie pan.

The polarity of the pulse cannot be used to determine the dyrection of the wave coming (assuming that the discharge is negative, since positive lightning and bipolar ones will give different signals)?
Is there a way to make an omnidirectional antenna instead of using two signals and composing them?
