I'm finishing up my mini static gap TC. It's about 270 watts. I've been reading that using the house's mains ground to ground the secondary and strike rail is not a good idea. However, I have seen other people's coils use mains ground without any problems. For my larger TCs I've always ran them outside and made an earth ground. But this TC is small and and I'd like to be able to run in it indoors. So can it be done?

I personally wouldn't advise doing a mains ground, not if you like your computer,TV,radio,ect.ect. It CAN and most probably WILL feed back into the house current..

Strike rail is ALWAYS grounded to the base of the secondary. This ensures currents circulate within the secondary itself and not going all over the place.
For a 200W coil, i would run that on MAINS Ground provided you don't have sensitive equipment plugged in on the same circuit. Anything more, than you probably want to look into dedicated ground.

If the coil is so small you can guarrantee all strikes will be to your strike rail, or to the sheet of alli foil under the TC that's also connected to the secondary bottom, then fine. If there's any chance of it hitting the ceiling, or the light suspended from it, then you are circulating RF current in a huge loop, which is bound to be not good.

OK, thanks for the info guys.
The TC works great! I'm getting 6-7 inch streamers from a 2 inch coil and I'm happy with that. It doesn't look like the streamers will ever reach the strike rail and certainly not the ceiling LOL, so I'll use mains.
If sensitive electronics are connected to mains will they only be affected if the streamers hit the strike rail? Right now the lightning is just arcing into the air.
