Hello:
I would try the small fiber re-enforced cut off wheels for a Dremel Tool. At the hardware store they sell 2 kinds of cut off wheels for Dremel tools, the first are the fragile abrasive disks which are great for precision work, but they wear down soooo fast, and they are very fragile. If you look they also sell fiber re-enforced cut off wheels for the same rotary tool. these are like mini versions of angle grinder cut off wheels, with these this job should be a "piece of cake" To cut the core, but not damage the coils, should be easy with a Dremel tool and this cut off wheel. They are handy for all kinds of small metal work, and most important they will fit where the angle grinder does not, like the exhaust under my car one time, it took a while but it got the job done.

Well I sawed through the welds with a hack saw and eventually got the core apart.
I replaced the laminated, gapped E core with an ungapped ferrite double-U core (cross sectional area = 4.47 cm^2) and took a few quick measurements with a function generator and a meter.
It looks like the primary has about 20 turns, and the secondary about 1700 turns; and, unfortunately, the output falls off fast above 6 khz.
So, it seems to me that this kind of coil would not be very useful for a ferrite-cored HFHV transformer.

Actually it's not a "HEI coil" per se, but a MSD performance coil that's built similarly (same type of "E" core, but lower inductances and winding resistances).
