Hey,
I finished a nice and simple relay time delay a couple days ago. i was wondering what length of time you guys have your delay set-up at?
If I adjusted the circuit for a time delay of a bit less than a second, the resistors (5W 10ohm metal-oxide, 30 ohm), go extremely hot and finally one failed.
If I set it @ ~0.2 seconds with the same resistor config, the delay would function but as soon as the relay shorted the resistors the breaker went of..
With the same time setting with a single 5W 10ohm resistor, all the happens is a major resistor pop and subsequent death.

Hi, what is your mains voltage? For 230V you can use ~4.7R resistor (I actually used 3R3 without problems), and for 120V mains maybe 2.2-2.7R. Then 0.2s should really be enough.

For mains inrush, I allow 5 cycles or 100milliseconds, Rok. Any more and your resistor will cook.
I have another job lot of parts coming from Russia, including a box of 180R 25W cased heatsink-type resistors - if you put three of these in parallel, you'll have 60R 75W, which I'd say was about right for your soft starter, and will definitely hold for 100 milliseconds until the relay kicks in. I'll send three when they get here.
