Hello all, I just wanted to make sure I'm doing everything right. I was originally told to do about 1/8" or so spacing, from the LAST coil, between the topload. I'm confused, because I've been looking at many new topics posted all over, and I see pictures of people having a inch or more space, between the top final coil turn, and the topload. What should I do? Currently I have exactly 2-3mm spacing. I figured if I needed more, I could just insert a simple spacer. At the bottom, I have 1" spacing. So, What exactly is the correct way to do it? I'm confused, please help!

Sample picture: Should have put a reference size...4.5" x 24"

There's no "magic" top-turn-to-topload standoff distance.

Basically, the topload needs to be of a large enough diameter, and positioned at a small enough distance, to provide electrostatic shielding (and eliminate corona discharge) from the top turn on the secondary.

The standoff distance is influenced by topload shape (toroid, sphere, etc), topload major diameter, secondary diameter, etc. If you're using a toroid of 12-18" diameter on your 4.5" dia secondary, a typical height would be 2-3" from the top winding to the bottom plane of the toroid.

If, when you get your coil fairly well tuned, you see actual arcing or blue glowing corona discharge from the top turn, you need to lower your topload, or increase its diameter. (This assumes that you don't have any bumps or kinks in your secondary wire near the top that cause large localized field gradients.)

Thanks for the help, My secondary doesn't have any major flaws. I noticed with a flash theres just a few spots where the coil is space a little, but nothing major. No crosses, no bumps. As for the topload, You can see a picture below, but the inner-disc is 10", with 4" vent metal tubing. So roughly 18". Awhile ago, I was considering getting 3" diameter vent pipe, as a small corona shield just in case....since I've always said 'never hurts to be too protective'

So yes, Whenever I get my resistors in the mail and put the whole frame together, Hopefully all will go good :) I PLAN to have a decent size screw in the topload, So I can just screw it down into my secondary, maybe even to adjust height IF needed. :)
