I once read about a very simple device that would produce a small electric charge from nuclear radiation. I forget what type of radiation it was although I am fairly certain it was not Xrays. It reminded me of a potato battery because of the simplicity and the very low electric charge. Does anybody have any idea what I am talking about? I tried google but to no avail.

Google "RTG"

or maybe "betavoltaic"

I wonder if I will ever be able to buy a betavoltaic battery.
Or maybe it's possible to make one myself. I guess I could simply take a tritium glowring and glue it to a solar cell. But the output of that would be virtually zero. I might just as well run the solar cell on moon light.

There are many different possibilities, alle of them useless for practical purposes Link2

I have tried to use Alpha radiation to build up a charge and I got a detectable charge but the current was too low to measure without special instruments.

I love the concept of the piezo generator, the sort of engine you might want to demonstrate from a Cockcroft-Walton or a Van de Graph

Will do! All I remember is that it was incredibly simple and produced enough power to run a watch.

WOW! Fascinating article! I thought that you couldnt use thermocouples to generate electricity in space because it is difficult to cool things down in a vacuum. I would love to have an electric scooter powered by a RTG. 0-20MpH in 3 days!

I am certain that the thing that I was thinking about was not an RTG

I had a Thread under Chemistry about a method that does not use Betavoltaics, and it was in principle very simple to the potato battery - I had asked a while back that the thread be locked due to it becoming hectic, until I can get a lab to help me get Hard Numbers from my results as even though I got power, I did not have means to get all of the information needed accurately to draw a conclusion
