Ive finally been lucky enough to come across a power pole transformer!!
Its rated 10 kVA at 22 kV with input at 250/500 V. Its also been reconditioned and all freshly repainted. I plan to have it set up as 500 volt input but only run from 240, im hoping this will help with limiting current draw internally and leaving less external current limiting to worry about. This will leave me with about 11 kV output which is the voltage I am after to run a Tesla coil. Aiming to run it at about 5000 Watts through a variac so I can slowly power it up.
I am looking at using 942C20P15K-F capacitors, currently have 192 on their way from the USA. I've got about 10kg of 18 AWG wire here, just need to find a suitable pipe around the 12 to 14 inch mark for me to wind about 1200 turns onto.
I will progressively work on this over the next 6-12 months as I get time, will post more pics when it's finished.

Agreed, We have something near that size at our schools electrical class that just sits on a powerpole on the wall for show...It doesn't have those 2 huge insulators though! But it's still a huge rectangular transformer with 2 small insulators.
I agree though, That's a nice fine! Hope it does wonders for you :D

Yea, and external ballast is absolutely necessary. It is indeed a great looking transformer! And a nice high voltage ;),
You could just use a spool of wire for ballast. Or you could make your own inductor, or perhaps even use some microwave oven transformers with shorted secondaries for a quick ballast. A home-wound inductor would probably be the way to go for a permanent solution.
Thanks for the comments. Yeah I love those large insulators, makes the thing look half scary! That is a good link you posted RP181, made for some good reading, thanks. I'm leaning toward an inductive ballast for current limiting so I dont throw all my power away as heat using any kind of resistor. Will keep an eye out on ebay or look to make my own in the next few months, might even price up a professionaly made one.

You lucky dog, Neil. I hardly ever hear of anyone getting kit like that in the UK. So please do tell us if you had to get a second mortgage, or if it was one of those miracle things like me getting two glorious Parmeko Neptune transformers today on ebay for less than a tenner for the two because no else bid for them? So do tell...
