i'm prototyping a new driver for a SSTC

But i'm stuck with a secondary with a HD ratio of 5:1, can i use this secondary without problems ?

because i have read that an HD aspect ratio of 3:1 is best.

and last time i tried an SSTC driver on that secondary i only got little sparks.

My experience with SSTCs tells me that tight coupling is a key to long sparks, what is more important than the HD ratio would be the diameter and resonant frequency.

I have f.ex. a 1.4MHz coil that is about 8:1 and it is alot less effective than my 3:1 at 300kHz.

But 5:1 does not sound bad at all

ok so a HD ratio of 5:1 isn't bad

its only a tiny coil 50cm length and 10cm diameter

i was getting woried because the last time i tested that secondary i had more voltage about 100 windings below the toroid than on the toroid.

and with toroid my UCC's died every hour.

but great to know i can use my little coil for testing wink

hi Guys,

regarding HW ratio, is this correct?

for coils <SGTC> with 4"-6" dia, best to use 4.5:1?

and best for SSTC is 3:1?

my newer coil for SSTC(in the works) is 4.2"dia x 10" x #32 = 323KHz no topload 2.4:1 H/W ratio

oh just one question i always have some problems with winding a secondary

if i wind it and im halfway, then at about 1/4 of the coil the windings get looser and they start overlapping.

or am i winding the secondary wrong ?

You need to keep the wire with a firm hand to make tight windings, place pieces of electrical tape along the done work, this will help against loosening and it does not leave glue.

It takes great care and concentration to make a perfect secondary, for the best result do the winding and first layer of varnish in one day, this might avoid loosening windings due to temperature changes over night etc.

That being said, I have done a 1500 turns secondary with 0.1 mm wire over 8 days, and I always open my windows at night, the tape and tight winding only resulted in a couple of loose windings 3 places on the entire coil, something that was fixable when doing the varnish job.

small coil is 5.1 medium 4.1 large 3.1
so yes for 4"-6" is good to use

if its only 50cm long you could use an electric drill to wrap it and then spray it with clear polyerothane. overlaps are not acceptical in my book. if your coil starts to breakout at any other place than the top it may be out of tune. a little coil may be a MHz or more and have harmonics
