hi guys,
here is my latest setup of flyback driven SGTC.. 3"dia x 8.5" coil length x #30AWG wire.. cap is 2.5nF(home made).. topload is 1.5"minor x 5.5" major...topload minor should have been 3", but I dont have one right now... OR I could make another torroid topload..but thats gonna be sooner..
1> can I possibly increase output arc length with having a higher value cap.. from 2.5nF ->>> 10nF?
2> w/c is a better primary, a flat pancake or helical??

Increasing the cap size will give you more power, but that's only if the flyback is powerful enough to fully charge the larger capacitor. Also, remember you need to change the primary inductance if you add that cap.
For a small coil, a helical coil might get arcs to the secondary, so an inverse conical coil would be the best, and just experiment with the coupling to maximize power transfer.

You can trade arc length for break-rate, the limit is mainly spark gap losses. e.g. I used a 1.4 W hv generator from a laser printer for 0.5 Hz break-rate and got about 300mm (1 ft.) arcs to an earthed target.

hi guys,
thanks for the replies.
got them noted.. my to-do list for my sgtc:
#1> add another torroid , so this makes 2 of them.. my secondary is 3" ID.. my 1st torroid has minor dia = 1.35".. rule = diameter of secondary coil SHOULD BE EQUAL to torroid minor dia...
#2> make some more diy CAPS.. say 5nF so primary turns can still be in the 1-15T range, more than 15T for primary = LOSSY
#3> for starters, since im using DC supply for TC, Im also going to use a DC motor(fed with variable duty PS) for an RSG... or maybe an RQ SG? hmm
