In the video, you talk about keeping the control wiring separate from the power wiring. Don't these ignition coils have a separate terminal for the HV return? (ie, the other end of the winding that drives the plug?)

No - the HV return path is the same as the +12V return. The TTL trigger and its return are two of the 4 pins, these need to be run separated of the coil power leads.

The coil laminations are isolated.

Wow! Very informative! Thank you very much!

I know about Megasquirt - in fact I have a friend with a VW who plans to turbo it in the near future and plans to use MS as well. I've been asked to help him set it up, should be quite fun. I would have gone with MS on my DSM, but since the stock code has been disassembled and it has been modified to run speed density, I will push the stock ECU for now and then upgrade when it is necessary.

Although I would like to run a COP, I don't see how I would benefit from it unless I figured out to get 4 outputs out of 2. I honestly don't know what the stock ECU ignition circuit looks like, so I guess that would be the next thing to look into.

While I have you here, what are your opinions of CD systems like MSD? What kind of spark energy does the D585 put out? I'll have to get my DMM and some spare coil packs and start measuring...

In the most broad sense, CDI ignitions are good for high cylinder pressures (i.e. boosted) and/or to compensate for bad A/F mixtures. If you are going fuel injection and not extreme boost levels regular induction coils work well. The world was a different place 20 years ago with carburetors - where A/F mixtures were all over the place and not very uniform.
