I am currently working on a Tesla Coil for a chemistry professor.

And I am trying to figure out how I want to ground the secondary.

My first coil I grounded the normal way, I had a stake I could drive into the gound.

My second coil I just took the chance and grounded it into the house wiring.

But niether is very acceptable here. This coil is to be built on the third floor, and although it will be small and mobile, I really don't want to rely on the weather outside everytime we try to start up the coil.

I don't want to plug in to the wall...for obvious resons.

I could just not ground it.....but that would limit the coil's preformance...which is key.

Is there anouther option? Is there some filter I could through put on the end of the secondary so I could just ground it?

I do inteand to ask my Professor what he wants to do, but I'd like options.

EDIT: Just talked to professor, he sugested that I use the water pipe system. However, after running this by an electrician (of sorts) he sugested that this might turn the intire building into a radio transmitter if the water pipe system isn't properly grounded.

When I demonstrated my TC for my high school physics class, I just used the water pipe system to ground it. It will work.

he sugested that this might turn the intire building into a radio transmitter if the water pipe system isn't properly grounded.
what?

Water pipes are OK (according to the building safety procedures they must be grounded and even if they wouldn't be nothing bad can happend). You can also have a look outside the windows - if you lucky there might be the lightning conductor nearby which would be the best solution... good luck!

Agreed. I work in construction and here in NYC you can't even bring power into a building until the water mains have been run. (For the purpose of grounding). All trades run off of gasoline generators if the water mains are not installed.

Awsome!

thanks!

I'll probably go with the water pipe system then.

LARGE (3ft diameter) aluminum tub also works as good "grounding" if no EARTH ground is available
