This thread maybe a bit off topic, but has anyone pursued the idea of placing a large coil in a "low pressure" enclosure or at least the top load as a way to increase the arc length?

I am assuming there is a reason some of the worlds largest plasma globes are about on 12" in diameter (commercially available ones anyways)

Is it because the larger the volume the more difficult it is to create a below atmospheric pressures?

It has been done! I forget which site but I think it was extreme electronics? He put a coil or a marx gen in a big lexan box full or argon IIRC. I'll try and find the link. As far as I know there is no reason you couldn't do this on a large scale, other then cost.

*EDIT*

I was thinking of Mike's Electric Stuff Link2 but I can't seem to find it so maybe I was wrong.

I wonder what an audio modulated DRSSTC would sound or look like in a large under pressured enclosure. I have been wanting to do this for a while =P

I ran my DRSSTC arc through a 4 inch by 2 foot acrylic tube. Ends were capped, but not vacuum sealed. The 2 foot arcs were SO much quieter. I would assume it was because the arcs didn't have as much surrounding air to expand and contract. It was kinda neat, but the plastic got way to hot. I don't do that anymore...

Just my 2 cents...

It would be cool to put a whole Tesla coil into a box and try! But, i would think that in a vacuum it would get hotter, because of less air. Is that wrong?

You could just put the toroid in the glass or plastic, but that would make sealing a bit more difficult. I just think it would be funny to have a tiny Tesla coil completely inside a plasma globe :P. Not very practical though.

@ Arcstarter: that would be cool.

check what this guy did with a regular compressor and some tubing!

linky amazed

There are millions of CRT's with more volume than a 12" sphere. But consider the physical risks of a large glass vacuum container that you can see inside and put your hand on!

Thanks for picture of Tesla coil discharge in suction hose from refrigerant compressor. Can you give us its attribution?
